BREAKING: Padres trade with Orioles for Laureano, O'Hearn

A.J. Preller and the Padres were still looking for a couple of bats to bolster the team's offense after trading for two pitchers and a catcher earlier today, and now they've got them.

Ramón Laureano immediately slots in as the team's new starting left fielder. In that role, he's shown himself to be a good enough defender, but it's his 145 OPS+ that led to the Padres trading for him. He has a team option for just $6.5M next season, which should be a bargain.

Ryan O'Hearn, who has split time between LF/1B/DH this season, made the AL All-Star team with his 135 OPS+. As a left-handed hitter, there's a fair bit of overlap here with Gavin Sheets and Luis Arráez, so we'll see how that ends up shaking out. Like Arráez, O'Hearn is a free agent after this season.

After the trades that have happened earlier today, Boston Bateman had been moved up to the #4 prospect in the Padres farm system. The 19-year old left handed pitcher shows promise but is years away from making the big league team.

I'll update this post when there's more information about what the cost was to the Padres in acquiring O'Hearn and Laureano.

The San Diego Padres front office is still working the phones and making deals as we inch closer and closer to the MLB trade deadline at 3pm PT. I'll be live-streaming on YouTube starting at 2:30pm PT and watching the chaos happen.
