San Diego Padres
Dylan Cease, Padres pummeled by Diamondbacks - San Diego Union-Tribune
Cease, who was counted on at the start of the season to be the same anchor in the rotation he was in 2024, continued to flounder almost inexplicably in an 8-2 loss to the Diamondbacks at Petco Park.
“It is a bit of a head scratcher,” Shildt said afterward.
The right-hander with the 98 mph fastball and devastating slider surrendered a home run in three successive innings and departed after six innings having allowed six runs on five hits and three walks.
Preller talks plan for Padres ahead of Trade Deadline - Padres.com
It’s stating the obvious to say this will be an eventful Trade Deadline in San Diego. With A.J. Preller as general manager, they all are.
Still, there’s much riding on the direction Preller chooses over the next three weeks. The Padres are currently tied in the loss column for the final playoff spot in the National League. They have a roster laden with superstars. They also have several glaring holes.
Padres Daily: Can’t keep going like this at catcher; just offensive; Joe goes off mound - San Diego Union-Tribune
The Padres do seek a catcher in addition to a right-handed hitter to improve their depth in advance of the July 31 trade deadline. Try as some teams might, there just don’t seem to be enough willing trade partners until after the draft, which takes place during next week’s All-Star break.
And before pulling the trigger on a deal, the Padres actually have an in-house solution to at least try.
Adjustments - Letters to A.J.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence that Kelly’s worst fastball of the night was thrown in a perfect hitters count when you’d expect maximum effort. Or maybe Kelly had a diminished sense of danger after seeing very unserious body language from a supposed singles merchant. Maybe that clownshoes statue take was Arraez playing with his food. Probably not, but it’s fun to consider.
