San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State picked to finish eighth in Mountain West preseason poll - San Diego Union-Tribune
San Diego State has much higher expectations for the 2025 football season after winning three games overall and two in the Mountain West a year ago.

Those who cover the Mountain West don’t share the Aztecs’ optimism.

For the second straight year, SDSU was picked to finish eighth in the 12-team conference. The preseason media poll was released Wednesday as MW media days opened at Circa Resort & Casino.

Trey White and Gabe Plascencia Named Mountain West Preseason Players of the Year - GoAztecs
White is the first San Diego State defensive lineman to be named the MW preseason defensive player of the year and the fourth defensive player overall, joining cornerback Leon McFadden in 2012, cornerback Damontae Kazee in 2016 and safety Patrick McMorris in 2022. The Aztecs, who return seven of their nine all-conference performers from a year ago, have all 11 starters back on defense this season (note that returning Teivis Tuioti and departing Tupu Alualu each had six starts at defensive tackle, and are counted as co-starters).

Plascencia, meanwhile, became SDSU’s third MW preseason special teams player of the year over the last four seasons (also KR/PR Jordan Byrd in 2022 and P/K Jack Browning in 2023). Plascencia made 13 of 14 field goals last year for the best field goal percentage (.929) in program history. The left-footed kicker has made 12 consecutive field goals entering 2025, tied for the sixth-longest active streak in the country and the second longest by an Aztec since at least the 1996 season.

SDSU’s Miles Byrd reveals his secret about Type 1 diabetes - San Diego Union-Tribune
“I don’t want to be the guy to explain diabetes,” Byrd said. “I just want to be the guy who’s there for them, a guy they can look at and see that he has Type 1 diabetes and he’s doing this. I just want to be an example and role model. I don’t know think I’m a diabetes educator. I know a good amount about it, but I’m not smart enough to teach somebody else what they need to do based on what their body is telling them.

“I just want to inspire people. I don’t want people to take the approach I did, where I was scared to inspire. I just want it to be something that people aren’t ashamed to talk about.”
