REACTION: Padres trade top prospects for pitching help

If you've been following the news this morning, you are aware that the San Diego Padres have traded for closer Mason Miller and LHP JP Sears from the Athletics in exchange for top prospect Leo De Vries. What you might not (yet) be aware of is that they actually gave up more than that.

Here is the podcast where Darren and John react to the news (separately):

And here is the full deal:

Here's some more context into what the Padres traded away:

De Vries (#1 Padres prospect, #3 MLB prospect)
Nett (#3 Padres prospect)
Báez (#13 Padres prospect)
Nuñez (#17 Padres prospect)

That's a big chunk of a pretty thin San Diego Padres farm system.

Miller is the best player coming back to the Padres in the deal, and it's at a position in which the team has the most strength right now.

Sears doesn't have an obvious place in the starting rotation at the moment.

Could this be a sign that A.J. Preller and the Padres have deals set up that include Robert Suarez and Dylan Cease heading out of town? Perhaps. Replacing those two guys with Miller and Sears would certainly clear up some money, giving some credence to the rumors that the team was looking to add to their roster without increasing payroll.

We'll keep you posted on anything else that happens between now and the MLB trade deadline, which is at 3pm PT today.
