Dodgers sweep the Padres with 5-4 win on Sunday

That was not the series the Padres were hoping for.

Dodgers sweep the Padres with 5-4 win on Sunday

I'm doing a live postgame show on YouTube RIGHT NOW! Come join us in the section:

Another day, another Padres loss to the Dodgers. This one finished off a sweep at home and gave the Dodgers a new 2 game lead in the NL West.

The game felt eerily reminiscent of some early-season Padres baseball. Lots of strikeouts, lots of runners being stranded on the basepaths and just enough grit to make it a competitive game anyway.

Things got off to a rough start in this game for the San Diego Padres. First, Tyler Glasnow struck out the side against the top of the Padres lineup. In the bottom half of the inning, Yu Darvish gave up a single, walk and two home runs to give the Dodgers a 4-0 lead early.

I might be crazy, but shortly after that first inning, it seemed like pitch-calling responsibilities switched from Darvish to Freddy Fermin. Over the next three innings, Darvish allowed 1 walk and zero hits.

From there, the Padres chipped away at the lead, starting with an RBI-double from Fernando Tatis Jr.

And then, as has become his trademark, Ramón Laureano hit a solo HR to close the gap to just 2 runs.

Around this time, Jackson Merrill left the game (maybe because he twisted his ankle last night?) and Laureano slid over to CF. That opened up LF for Gavin Sheets, who led off the 6th inning with a double.

Two batters later, Ryan O'Hearn (in the lineup as the starting first baseman!) doubled him in to lower the Dodgers' lead to just 1 run.

Xander Boagerts was hit by a pitch to lead off the 8th, kicking off a chance for San Diego to rally to tie or take the lead. Ramón Laureano, who has honestly been a godsend for the Padres since being acquired at the trade deadline, moved Boagerts over to third with a double two batters later.

Jose Iglesias, who was pinch-hitting for Jake Cronenworth against a LHP, hit a groundball up the middle which scored Xander from third and tied the game up at 4-4.

Unfortunately, it wasn't going to last very long. Mike Shildt went to Robert Suarez in the 8th inning to face Mookie Betts and the heart of the Dodgers lineup, a decision that led to a Mookie Betts HR and a 5-4 Dodgers lead heading into the 9th inning.

And that was that.

The Padres kick off their homestand tomorrow evening with a game against the San Francisco Giants. Nestor Cortes is expected to be on the mound, making the start for San Diego.
