Padres blanked in (another) loss to the Dodgers

Even without Clayton Kershaw on the mound, the San Diego Padres ran back last night's disappointing offensive performance and were shutout by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

This time it was Blake Snell on the mound for L.A., and Dylan Cease wasn't up for the task of matching the two-time Cy Young Award winner.

Let's start by talking about Dylan Cease and we'll come back around to the offense in a second.

Cease was either inefficient or terrible, depending upon how charitable you feel like being and how you feel about this catch that Jackson Merrill didn't make:

Either way, it was a poor start for Cease and the Padres, who found themselves down 5-0 after just two innings. He settled in for the next two innings but was replaced by David Morgan in the 5th due to a high pitch count.

David Morgan, as good as he's been, was on the mound when Teoscar Hernández hit his second HR in two nights:

Hernández had been struggling offensively heading into this series, and the Dodgers' bullpen was having a hard time keeping leads. With the Padres in town, those things apparently don't matter, because the Los Angeles Dodgers rode a Hernández HR and a stellar bullpen outing for another win in as many nights against San Diego.

Blake Snell, pitching against the Padres for the first time since leaving the team via free agency, was very effective. He sprinkled 5 hits over six innings and held the Padres scoreless, never seeming to be in any real trouble.

Will Smith, who managed to get on base a few times as well, killed several potential Padres rallies by cutting off stolen base attempts from Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Boagerts in the first two innings. That ended up being the Padres' best chance to score.
