Lozano was absent from the club’s matchday squad in its Decision Day win against Portland on Saturday. That absence was due to a verbal altercation that took place in the locker room earlier this month, sources said.

Lozano was subbed off at halftime during San Diego’s game against Houston on October 4. He was extremely unhappy about it, and that’s when the verbal altercation took place. One source said Lozano needs to prove how committed he is to the locker room in order to be available to play in the playoffs.

San Diego FC started players from the United States, Sweden, Ghana, Finland, Denmark, Panama and Norway on Saturday, when they beat the Portland Timbers 4-0 to secure the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for the upcoming Major League Soccer playoffs.

It may have taken a little time — and a few languages — to explain to the players what they had just accomplished … and what it means.

The MLS differs from much of the world’s leagues in that, well, there’s a playoff at all. The world’s top European leagues do not hold championship tournaments at the end of their seasons, choosing instead to honor the teams with the best regular-season records as champions.

San Diego FC (SDFC) will host the Portland Timbers in its historic first-ever Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs match, presented by Sharp HealthCare, on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Snapdragon Stadium. Kickoff for the Oct. 26 game is set for 6:30 p.m. PT, with live broadcast on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Portland advanced to the Round 1 Best-of-3 series after defeating Real Salt Late 3-1 in the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Wild Card game on Wednesday night at Providence Park.
