SDSU wins 5th straight game, Battle of the Oil Can

In the end, the game between the San Diego State Aztecs and Fresno State Bulldogs ended up being a lot less entertaining than we thought it would be. And we still don't have a good idea of how good they would perform against quality competition after SDSU dominated Fresno State to the tune of 23-0.

Despite a 5-2 record, Fresno State decided to announce at the beginning of the game that they were switching their starting QB from E.J. Warner to Carson Conklin, who spent most of this game looking overwhelmed.

I've seen people saying that the move made sense because Warner had 4 turnovers in the last Fresno State game, but it felt like they were giving the game away to SDSU with the move.

As such, the Aztecs were able to dominate on defense and do just enough on offense to pick up their 5h consecutive win. Boise State stands as the only team in the Mountain West with a better conference record. UNLV, who is also 6-1, is the only team in the conference with a similar overall winning percentage.

The San Diego State defense forced two turnovers, both interceptions thrown by Carson Conklin in his first start with the Bulldogs, and returned one of them for a touchdown. That was almost enough by itself, based on the ineffectiveness of the Fresno State offense.

SDSU dominated time of possession for most of the game and was able to mostly avoid mistakes, although they did fumble the ball away on a double-reverse call that felt a little pointless based on the success rate the Aztecs were having giving the ball to their running backs.

Jayden Denegal was fine but certainly not great, he most succeeded at avoiding mistakes (although he did through a pick). Lucky Sutton got the bulk of the carries out of the backfield, racking up 131 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

Next week, San Diego State will be back at Snapdragon Stadium to take on the not-great Wyoming Cowboys and we'll keep trying to figure out how good this Aztecs team is.
