San Diego Padres
10 biggest MLB hot stove questions, from top free agents to latest trade rumors - USA Today
San Diego Padres All-Star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr.: They certainly don’t want to trade him, and still may not listen now, but with all of their bloated and back-loaded contracts, someone is going to eventually have to depart. And no one making big money has more trade value than Tatis, whose 14-year, $340 million contract suddenly looks rather reasonable.
Padres notes: For starters; Ruben Niebla’s new role, title; Ethan Salas update - San Diego Union-Tribune
The Padres are expected to give pitching coach Ruben Niebla the additional title of associate manager, sources said Tuesday.
It is not known exactly what Niebla’s expanded duties will entail, but the Padres want to lean on his broader understanding of the game and strategy beyond the pitching side.
Niebla’s new title and responsibilities will mean an expanded role for bullpen coach Ben Fritz, who recently received a two-year contract extension.
While most coaches from last year’s staff are expected to remain, the Padres also intend to hire a bench coach, who, a source said, will be chosen by Stammen. Brian Esposito, who served as bench coach for Mike Shildt, is expected to remain in a different role.
