The future of Section 1904
We know you have questions and want clarity, but we're still trying to figure things out ourselves.
A couple of weeks ago, we announced that we would be pausing operations. Since then, we’ve been laying low, but we’ve heard your calls for more clarification.
Over the next few days and weeks, you can expect to see changes made to this website and the social media properties associated with it. The Discord community will remain unchanged until we figure out the right thing to do with it; we don’t want to break up the bonds that have formed there.
We already turned off subscriptions before the end of 2025, so you shouldn’t see any more charges from us. If you subscribed for a year and would like to inquire about a partial refund for the months you paid for and never got, please email us and we’ll work with you on that.
As for the why that everyone has been asking about, we don’t have a sexy answer for you.
We couldn’t agree on the future of the company. Our visions, which seemed to be aligned when we began, turned out to be different enough once we started talking about the future in terms of years instead of months. In short, we skipped over some details early on that proved important later.
As we planned for 2026 and beyond, we found ourselves on different sides of philosophies about what we wanted Section 1904 to be. There were efforts made to try and find some common ground for us to stand on, but we were never able to get all the way there.
So, partially to protect a friendship that spans more than a decade, we have decided to walk away from partnering with each other on Section 1904. This is not necessarily the end of Section 1904 as a concept, but it is the end of Darren & John as the business partners atop the company.
While this partnership is ending, we each walk away believing that independent media can and will work in San Diego. This is not a conceptual failure. Your support of Section 1904 inspired us every step of the way and we thank you for believing in us and investing in the project.
This is not a divorce, you don’t have to pick a side. We will continue to be friends, as well as fans and supporters of each other’s work.
This also wasn’t planned. Neither of us have concrete plans for what comes next, just some vague ideas that might let us separately scratch the itch of providing content to this community.
As such, we will each be walking out of here with the same collection of subscriber email addresses (this is why you have been receiving emails from Bandwagon Beach over the last week or so), which is a technical way of saying you should be keeping an eye out for something from each of us in the near future in your inbox.
So long, and thanks for all the support.
-Darren & John
