A great day for San Diego sports
John Gennaro talks about a great Saturday night for San Diego sports fans.

On Friday, I told you about all of the different sports that were available to watch and/or attend this weekend. This morning, we're coming back around to talk about what a lovely Saturday it was.
Padres move to 3-0 to start the season

First up, it was the San Diego Padres continuing their series against the Atlanta Braves. Randy Vasquez, keeping the #3 spot in the rotation warm for Yu Darvish, threw 6 scoreless innings when the team needed them the most.
The Padres offense was stymied until Jake Cronenworth got on base with the strangest double I've ever seen:

Jake later came around to score on a Yuri Gurriel pinch-hit single, the only player to cross home plate all game for a 1-0 Padres win. Of course. I've missed this stupid sport so much.
This win doesn't happen without Fernando Tatis Jr., though. He put his body on the line in the 6th inning, and maybe felt some pain in his wrist after, to bring a HR back from over the fence and keep Matt Olson at 2B.

Manny Machado left the game with what looked like a worrying knee or calf injury, but he spoke to the media after the game and said, "It was just a little cramp. I've felt stuff like that before. It's not a big deal. It's nothing too concerning, for sure."
Manny was then seen after the Padres game hanging with former teammate at Jurickson Profar at the San Diego FC game, a good sign for sure.

San Diego FC starts the rivalry

San Diego FC vs. LAFC certainly felt like a rivalry, and maybe not even a new one, down at Snapdragon Stadium last night. There were 4 yellow cards issued in the first 24 minutes of action and 8 yellow cards for the match total, including one that left San Diego FC up a man for a large chunk of the 2nd half.
San Diego FC was up 3-0 with just a few minutes left in the 1st half and ended up giving up two goals quickly for a 3-2 lead at the half. Igor Jesus picked up his 2nd yellow card just a few minutes into the 2nd half, which gave SDFC the advantage they needed to put the game away (although not without plenty of fight and scary attacks from LAFC).
This was a real prove-it game for SDFC, although it feels like they prove something new about themselves each week. This was a bounce-back from their first loss, the reintroduction of Chucky Lozano and a way to show that they don't have to live in the shadow of LAFC, even if they are modeling San Diego FC after LAFC's success.
Section news
Okay, first, it didn't go great for every San Diego team on Saturday. The San Diego Wave lost 2-1 to Orlando Pride on the road and the San Diego Seals lost a really important game in Rochester against the Nighthawks. They've now dropped behind Rochester in the NLL standings with just a few weeks left in the season.
Now, onto some Section 1904 business. As you may have noticed, we're building this ship while at sea, which means that you'll see a lot of new stuff popping up in the coming weeks.
One of those new things is that Section 1904 is now on Bluesky and Twitter/X. If you're on either one of those platforms, give us a follow!
Don't forget to subscribe to Section 1904! You'll need at least a free account to comment on our posts here on the site, and you'll eventually need a paid account to hear full episodes and read full written posts. Darren and I will be back with a new podcast episode tomorrow.
