Why we're launching a media company
John Gennaro explains why he and Darren Smith are starting a San Diego sports media company.

Today is the day, after months of brainstorming and weeks of preparation, that I launch a sports media company with my good friend Darren Smith. Here's a podcast where we explained what we're trying to build and why:
As someone that has worked for FOX Sports, The Mighty 1090, NFL Media, SB Nation and Yahoo Sports, I have a lot of experience with both local-focused and national sports media companies. I have mostly good things to say about all of those stops, but I also voiced my opinion at each one that there had to be a different way. Fans were getting left out of the conversation far too often.
While newspapers are bought and sold every few months, communities still rely on them for their sports news. While magazines are failing, communities still rely on them for their sports reporting and opinions. While radio companies attempt to make enough cuts to find profitability, communities still rely on them for their sports takes and coverage of breaking news. While TV tries to make every last advertising dollar they can on the fading stars of generational players and coaches, communities still rely on them for their sports entertainment outside of the games themselves.
You get my point. It's 2025, the internet exists as the great equalizer, and sports communities deserve better. Since I have never been able to convince any of the sports media companies that I've worked for to take this hard turn into uncharted waters, I've instead decided to partner up with my favorite radio host and my friend to see if it's possible.
One of the keys to this plan, from the very beginning, was to build a community instead of a show. That's why it only makes sense to make the entire thing fan-supported. We want our success to be determined by the listeners, the readers and the supporters instead of advertisers and large corporations. I think San Diego deserves that kind of representation in local sports media and I hope that you agree.
